Featured Song: The Bowery  By Steppin Stone
This Summer  be sure to catch some of the
hottest shows in Richmond.  The Richmond Buzz
is featuring 4 of Richmond's talented female
lead singers.
( The Richmond Buzz )
What is the best memory or event you
have in regards to being a lead singer
in a band?
( Elana Lisa )
Gosh, there are so many.  The best
memories I have being a lead singer of
this band is the memories of building
this family and getting to know each
member of my band so that we can
bond.  Not only bond on a musical
level but on a family/friend level.
We have had so many wonderful,
funny, hurtful, silly memories.  Okay,
one that stands out… We played this
gig in Maryland, years ago, and Jason
(my guitarist) pissed me off (he is also
one of my very best friends) and I
threw a drink in his face in front of
everyone.  Haha!  Although it sounds
bad, it was funny.  Also, when he put
hot sauce on his finger and started
going around the room

What females have influenced your life and why?
( Elana Lisa )
My mother was my biggest influence.  She raised me on her own and
taught me that if you want something bad enough, you have to go after
it because it won’t come to you.  She taught me strength and courage.
She was loving, caring, smart and honest.  Very honest!!  Even though,
while growing up, my voice was going through changes (not the kind
boys have… haha) and I was singing heavy metal (screaming more then
singing) my mom always gave me positive feedback and she also told me
to go after my dreams.  Well mom, I’m still singing!
( The Richmond Buzz )
What song speaks to your
soul, and why?
( Elana Lisa )
Work me Lord.  “So honey
don’t you go and leave me,
Lord,
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
Honey, don’t you go off and
leave me, Lord.
Can’t I show you how hard it
is
Trying to live when you’re
all alone.

Everyday I keep pushing,
Keep trying to move forward
( The Richmond Buzz )
What is the best form of flattery a fan can say or do to a musician?
( Elana Lisa )
You bought tears to my eyes (obviously in a good way) or you gave me
chills or I love watching you perform.  When I perform, I want the
audience to feel what I’m feeling. I want them to experience whatever
it is that I am experiencing while singing that song.  Whether it’s a
song about a struggle or it’s a song about the good times, I want
them to feel it.  Flattery comes in many ways, it’s not just verbal.
When I perform and I see someone watching and enjoying, to me, that’
s flattery.  When people get up and dance because your groove is
tight… that’s flattery.
( The Richmond Buzz )
What other talents do you have besides singing?
( Elana Lisa )
Communicating.  I love getting to know people.   You can learn a lot
about a person if you just ask the right questions.
I play guitar and I write music.  I am in the midst of writing a book.  I
love writing.  There is so much to write about… now all I have to do is
find the time.
( The Richmond Buzz )
Describe what the life a lead singer
is like, what are the highs and lows.
( Elana Lisa )
I love fronting a band.  When I’m on
stage, it’s my time to feel or be
whoever I want to be.  You get a
certain freedom to release any
tension the day might have brought
you.  There are no limits, no rules,
no holding back.   As lead singer I
have the most equipment to carry,
just ask the guys, they'll tell ya.
That mic can get mighty heavy.  Oh
( The Richmond Buzz )
How much personal
experience do you
draw from when
writing songs, do you
generally write
what you are
currently going
through and put it to
music?
( Elana Lisa )
Most of my songs are
written from
personal
experiences.  That is
my therapy.   Some
songs deal my
friends and families
( The Richmond Buzz )
Who's CD's do you have in your collection?  If you could meet any
female singer from any era, who would it be and why?
( Elana Lisa )
I love all types of music, that’s not to say I love all artists.  I have
classical music in my CD collection like Bach and Tchaikovsky; I
have many heavy metal CD’s like Mano war, Slayer, Megadeath, old
Metallica; I have other music like, Sublime, Violent Femmes, Elton
John, Barbara Streisand, Heart, Marley, The Dead, Billie Holiday,
Janis Joplin, Etta James, Zeppelin, Floyd, Steel Pulse and lots of
local band CD’s as well.  I have a nice selection of local music in my
CD collection (support local music!!).
If I can meet any female singer from any era who would it be???
Hummmm… this is hard because I would love to meet many of them
but I would have to say, Janis Joplin.  Not only because she put so
much heart and soul into her performance and music but because
she seemed like an incredible person outside of the music as well.  I
would have loved to sit down with her and jam for hours
(acoustically) and write some tunes together and then I would
have loved to wake up the next morning and go for a walk and just
talk… talk about everything and anything just to get to know her
better.

putting his finger in people’s mouths.   Or the time when my bassist,
Alan, my drummer, Rod and I did a broken down acoustic set and nobody
paid attention to us so I turned my back to the audience and we started
jamming to each other.  Or when we went to NYC and I met Whoopi
Goldberg (or what I thought was) or when Bob Dylan walked right in
between us on 58th and Broadway and some of us chased him down
while others went for a beer.  There are just so many great memories.
Thank God.
and the mic stand… fagettabout it!  Don’t get me started on the
cable.
The highs of being a lead singer are feeling good about my
performance, having the audience respond and getting to the “place”
where I just don’t remember much about the night because I was so
into it that my mind went off to the “special place”… the place of
euphoria. 
Some nights (few at that… thank God) getting through a gig is like
pulling a 16 wheeler up a mountain.  Those would be the lows.  It’s
when the audience isn’t there, so I have to perform to the 3 people in
the back of the bar.  Although I love performing for those three
people… the energy might not be there to pull me through the 2-3
hour gig.  A major low is if my allergies are kickin’ or I’m recovering
from a cold/flu and my vocal ability is not up to par… that can turn
into a very long night for me as well.  As a vocalist, our instrument
is internal and if our instrument has “dust” or other wonderful
things on it, we can’t wipe it off with a cloth or change a string to
make it easier to sing.  But ending on a “high” note… Being a lead
singer is an incredible experience through all the highs and lows.
But something is driving me, oh, back,  And something’s trying to hold
on to me…”  This song represents many things in my life.  I’m happy I’m in
a better place now, but I will never forget  Where I came from and
what I had to do to get here and How hard I have to work just to stay
in the “good place”.
experiences as well.  Traveling Man is about my Uncle Marty and his
travels around the world and A Cure is about my mom’s battle with
breast cancer.  When you write from the heart (which usually
comes out of experiences) it makes performing the song a trip down
memory lane.
