(Jenna) Well, after we came up with the name, I decided to Google it one day just to see if there were any other bands with that name. A link to some science experiment came up that was done on spiders and their habitat called “Silk Attraction” meaning the web that a spider spins in order to attract it’s prey. I was like “Woah. That’s perfect.” and luckily no other bands popped up with the same name. So, in summation, the web is the music we create, the prey is our audience, and we are the spider.
(The Richmond Buzz) How did you come up with the name for the band and what does it mean?
(from left to right) Del Wilhite, Chris Rose, Jimi Campbell, and Jenna Bayly.
(Chris) Well, Jimi came up with the name...but Jimi always wears silk panties and we are all attracted to them.
(The Richmond Buzz) What do you want written on your tombstone?
(Jenna) I Do know that personally, for me, anyone that’s in that room or bar or club, I’m going to do everything in my power to give you a high energy good time. I feel like if I overfill your cup, you’ll overfill mine right back. I love to feed off of the feeling of the crowd and recycle it. They get me pumped!
(The Richmond Buzz) When someone goes to a Silk Attraction show, what can they expect? Describe your music
(Jimi) I always try to put myself in the crowd's shoes right before I go on stage. I want the audience to feel like they've gotten hit in the face after we go off stage, but in a good way, if that's possible. Personally, describing our music begins to get annoying because I don't feel like we have a clear cut predecessor, so I leave it to the fans to decide.
(The Richmond Buzz) When you look at some of the costs of fame such as giving up your privacy and having your personal life exposed to the world, if you were to become famous how would you deal with the down sides of fame?
(Chris) They can expect something different. How Silk Attraction does rock-N-roll...I want our audience to come to a show and escape the worries of the world.
(The Richmond Buzz) Tell me the meaning behind the lyrics of your song “Blood”, who wrote the song?
(Del) Hostile, to be honest...very alive, up-and-coming, but generally hostile. Every once in a while you will meet a band who really gets what music is about, then you connect. That's what I feel, anyway.
(The Richmond Buzz) What is the Richmond rock scene like?
(Jimi) It's definitely tough. It feels like for the most part, no one really gives a damn unless they are your friends, or your music really touches someone new. But every new fan brings thousands of more reasons to push through, so hopefully it gets easier for us.
(The Richmond Buzz) What are the ingredients that keep a band together for the long haul, what keeps Silk Attraction pushing forward?
(Jenna) I feel like I was really lucky when it came to the music teachers I had through school. I connected with every one of them from elementary to high school. They were my main influence. Then, of course, there is the moment when I was about 11 years old, I turned on MTV and was introduced to my idol- Stevie Nicks. She is the woman. She has always inspired me musically, and mainly, lyrically.
(The Richmond Buzz) Who would you say influenced you musically in your personal life? Who got you interested in being a musician?
(The Richmond Buzz) What’s the wildest thing that has ever happened during a show or backstage?
(Jimi) No one in my family listened to or liked music except for my sister, and even her taste was horrible, i.e. Bobby Brown. However, she would always have one good cassette out of a hundred, and the first one of these I stumbled upon was The Cure's "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me". Robert Smith's vocal patterns and unusual guitar mannerisms, along with Simon Gallup's bass playing really inspired me. It was all downhill from there, including bands such as Blink 182, Pink Floyd, and many others.
(The Richmond Buzz) Jenna, during our photo shoot for The Richmond Buzz, the guys took twice as long getting ready than you did, is that typical?
(Chris) In my personal life it was my father. When he decided to give me his old drum set at the age of seven. I will always remember the day my father turned up the stereo in his truck to ZZ Top's "La Grange" and began beating the steering wheel to death as the drums came in. At that moment, I knew I wanted to play rock-N-roll. Musically, John Bonham of Led Zeppelin was my main influence, and fortunately I've been able to study with legendary drummer Bruce Crump of Molly Hatchet for the past threee years who has also been a big influence to me.
(The Richmond Buzz) Jenna, what do Chris, Del, and Jimi each bring to the table in the band, what do you appreciate most about each of them?
(Del) Dad dukes for sure got me started and had a lot of experience tips and hints for me. My aunt really supported and pushed me to get seriously involved.
(The Richmond Buzz) Of all the songs you have written, which song are you the most proud of? Also, give details on what the inspiration was behind writing it or why it is a favorite.
(Jenna) I don’t think I could give you a definite answer for this one. I am proud of every song we write. To me, it’s kind of like trying to pick your favorite child. I love all of them pretty equally. I am most proud of the songs that the crowd receives the best. Then you know you’ve done something that connects with people.
(The Richmond Buzz) What elements do you feel Jenna’s presence brings to the band?
(Del) That's definitely a hard one and I've gotta give two answers. Blood was probably my best arranged song, but I think the new song "Behind These Walls" made the most musical sense. Oh, and "Poison" of course...so that's three answers...
(The Richmond Buzz) Do any of you watch American Idol? If so, what do you think Simon’s comments would be after Silk Attraction auditioned?
(Jimi) You're goin' to Hollywood!
(Jimi) Well, I am the proudest of "Break Me Down". The song is definitely our "epic", and I feel like the song pushes the most emotiion out of it. It's easy for the song to be personified. When I hear it, I feel like it lives, cries, screams, bleeds, and then dies.
(Jenna) Chris brings to the table a massive amount of heart. He has got SO much heart for this. He oozes passion when it comes to this band and it comes out in his playing. Jimi brings to the table his unique style and talent. I still to this day have never seen anyone play the bass the way he does. Jimi has an uncanny way to see outside the box and bring something different and catching. Del brings a solid vision to the table. I don’t know where it comes from but he always seems to have it every time. He is excellent at being able to find that solid melody and that grabbing riff that reels you in again and again. They all, as a whole,
(Chris) We are a family and families stick it out through thick and thin. For me personally, this is the last thing left in my life that keeps me going.
(Jenna) (with the Simon accent) “Well, Jenna, that was actually a little impressive but your band could use some work!” HaHa!
(Chris) We played a show on Del's birthday one time. The fans kept feeding him shots all night. During the third set, Del stops one of the songs and tells the crowd he isn't playing another song until he pisses. Then he walked off the stage and went stright to the bathroom.
(Jenna) I definitely feel that if every band member isn’t on the same page, you won’t last long. I feel like we have the same goals we would like to achieve, ultimately, making music and being able to support ourselves solely off of our passion and doing what we love.
(Del) Power, attitude, and sex appeal.
(Jenna) DEFINITELY a show that we played at a popular Club in Richmond. Our friends and fans can get REALLY rowdy and outta hand (that’s why we love ‘em!) and one of our big, friendly, huggable buddies, decided to stage dive right onto one of our smaller buddies and broke his his foot with his landing! He ended up having to go to the hospital that night and the next time we saw him he had crutches and everything. He came for the Silk Attraction show and left with a broken foot. We were like “see what happens when our fans get riled up at a show?!” Needless to say, he gets free tickets for life! Haha.
(Del) Using your personal influences to work together and mesh out a song. Lots and lots of patience, and even more beer.
(Del) His answer would probably be, "Silk Attraction, replace your guitarist, drummer, bassist, and lead singer, and you've got a chance".
(Del) We lit a campfire in someone's front yard one time during a statewide drought. The owners were thrilled in the morning.
(Jenna) I wrote the lyrics to Blood. I think that my strength as a writer is that I write emotion. Sometimes I will tell a story, but more-so I like to just write emotion as the main focus. “The sound of this song makes me feel this way.” Blood, for me, is emotion and a little story rolled into one. It's a graphic account of what
(Jimi) Her presence is larger than life. She's gorgeous inside and out. She sings with just as much conviction and emotion as we put into our music. She's the star.
(Jenna) HaHa!! Actually, no! I usually take much longer than them to get ready…I really can’t even begin to tell you why they took so long…I had tried to hurry up that day because I didn’t want you and the guys to have to wait on me! HaHa…so much for that.
(Chris) She is a star! When she walks into the room you can feel her presence. She's a genuine person who truly cares for others and that means the most to me. She also can sing her ass off.
(The Richmond Buzz) What is next for Silk Attraction?
(Jimi) That's definitely the least of a concern. Life consists of obstacles no matter what. I'm sure it's something we all could adapt to.
(Chris) I'd have a baby with Scary Spice...and then deny it.
(Jenna) Honestly, I don’t know…..I can’t really tell you how I would deal with it since I haven’t been put into that situation… yet…but I CAN tell you that I probably would end up in some gossip magazine with a picture of me lashing out at some paparazzi for getting in my personal space. HaHa….Rock-N-Roll , baby.
Want More Silk Attraction???
(Del) Gimme a beer, and I can handle anything, anyone, in any place, at any time.
(Jimi) Spring break '89!
(Chris) No matter how many times you wiggle and dance, the last drop still falls in your pants!
(Jenna) “Wow.”
(Del) Just a treble clef and a cross...no name, no dates.
(Jimi) HaHaHa...Canadian World Tour!
(Chris) Keep pushing and show the world what we have.
(Jenna) World domination. HaHa!
(Del) I'd thoroughly enjoy playing in Europe.
it is to feel alone, ashamed, and helpless. You have given up on someone, and that someone could be you or someone else. Blood is a twisted cry for help. When I first wrote it I kept having flashing visions in my head of the music video for the song Jeremy by Pearl Jam. If you haven’t seen it, get on the internet and watch it. You’ll know exactly what I mean.
have the ability to mesh well and find the space that we need to make each song have that dramatic edge.
